While recruitment into the armed forces or
direct participation in hostilities is expressly prohibited for those under age 15 according to article 38 of the Convention, an
Optional Protocol to the Convention on the involvement of children in armed conflict was adopted by the General Assembly on 25 May 2000, which raises to 18 years the age of participation in hostilities and forced recruitment of children into armed forces.
