But what exactly does this mean? It means first of all that one give up the
aspiration to control the path of thinking. We are not to be the ones who decide
that this or that concept should now be considered, nor are we responsible for
marshalling arguments in favor of or against a particular idea. We are simply to
follow wherever presuppositionless thought takes us and to attend to and think
through whatever concepts it leads us to. Through this process we uncover the
ultimately dialectical character of thought. But as David Kolb astutely notes,
“that does not make us lords of its motion.” Hegel is as aware as Nietzsche
that understanding can serve our interest in power and control. But in contrast to
Nietzsche, he does not regard all thought as an expression of the will to power:
to seek to understand is not by its very nature to seek to dominate. Rather, genuine
philosophical thought begins only when we relinquish the desire to dominate
through understanding and let ourselves be guided by thought itself.
