Use as a replacement for sugar

Since its introduction, HFCS has begun to replace sugar in various processed foods in the United States.[13][14] The main reasons for this switch are:[15]

* Per relative sweetness, HFCS 55 is comparable to table sugar (sucrose), a disaccharide of fructose and glucose.[16] HFCS 90 is sweeter than sucrose; HFCS 42 is less sweet than sucrose.
* HFCS is somewhat cheaper in the United States as a result of a combination of corn subsidies and sugar tariffs and quotas.[17] Since the mid 1990s, the United States federal government has subsidized corn growers by $40 billion.[18][19]
* HFCS is easier to blend and transport because it is a liquid.[2
