Sharon Okays firing at residential areas if warning given in advance

PM says “terrorists aware of our sensitivity and therefore use civilians as shield to launch attacks”. Tells ministers that if warning does not help, IDF must respond to source of fire, “no matter where”.
Menahem Rahat

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said this (Sunday) afternoon that firing at Palestinian residential areas should be carried out if terrorists use area to stage attacks and if a warning is given prior to a response.

Sharon told ministers during the weekly Cabinet session that “the terrorists are aware of our sensitivity regarding firing at residential centers and therefore use them as shield to launch attacks. There needs to be a response to that”.

According to the prime minister, “The right way is first to warn those who provide shelter to the terrorists, and if that does not help, to attack the sources of the fire, no matter where. We must not let them get used to us not responding to fire”.

Sharon instructed Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Moshe Ya’alon to prepare the IDF for the option that the disengagement plan would be carried out under Palestinian fire. The prime minister said that he hopes that would eventually be prevented, but the IDF needs, nonetheless, to take such an option into account.

In addition, Sharon said that there are indications that the Egyptian army is more active in thwarting the smuggling of arms into the Gaza Strip. However, he added, the Egyptian activity is still far from what Israel expects.

Sharon’s remarks come three weeks after Attorney General Meni Mazuz warned that a bombardment of Gaza could be considered a war crime. Mazuz’s warning came after Sharon said, “If terrorists continue to launch Kassam rockets at us even after the pullout, we will bomb them back”.
Ali samo nakon upozorenja...

Pretnnja na Sharonov zivot

Under fire
A new breed of Jewish militants threatens Sharon's life - and Israel's stability

Almost 30 years ago, I visited Ariel Sharon at his ranch, an isolated spread not far from the Gaza Strip. There were Arab workers all over the place. "Aren't you worried about your safety?" I asked. Sharon gave me a look I've never forgotten.
Worried? He was a warrior in his prime, the toughest Israeli of his generation. Who could hurt him?

Sharon is an old man now, surrounded by a thick cordon of security. Hamas terrorists in Gaza routinely threaten him, but he's still not afraid of Arabs. It's his own countrymen who want to kill him.

The irony is obvious to Sharon himself. "I've been defending the Jews all my life," he said in July. "Now, I have to be protected from the Jews."

Not all the Jews, of course. But enough. The Shin Bet, Israel's internal security force, estimates that there are several dozen potential assassins at large in Israel right now. Most of them are young men, second- and third-generation settlers who live in small, temporary camps in the mountains of the West Bank. Security officials refer to them as "hillboys."

The hillboys have nothing personal against Sharon. They simply consider him an impediment to God's plan, which is replacing Israeli democracy with a theocratic dictatorship governed by Jewish scriptural law.

The hillboys are Al Qaeda in yarmulkes, and, like Al Qaeda, they are armed - mostly with weapons stolen from Israeli Army units that have been sent to protect them over the years. Some are infantry veterans. Others are self-taught.

And, like Al Qaeda (or Hezbollah or Hamas), the hillboys are not alone. "There are probably 500 Israelis who completely identify with them," according to a senior intelligence official. "But they have a lot of sympathizers among settlers and right-wing rabbis. They have supporters in the U.S., too, mostly in New York. Kach types."

Kach, an extremist group founded in America by the late Rabbi Meir Kahane, is outlawed both in Israel and the U.S. Nobody admits to belonging. But one of the group's former leaders, Noam Federman, is currently being held in Israeli administrative detention, a preemptive incarceration normally used only for suspected Arab security threats.

Israel also maintains an airport blacklist of foreign (mostly American) Jews it regards as potential hillboy allies. And it maintains close ties to U.S. authorities. Recently, the FBI arrested an American Jew for making a long-distance threat against Sharon.

Still, most of the hillboys are native Israelis. They are alienated not only from mainstream society, but even from the authority of the hard-line orthodox rabbis now calling upon soldiers to disobey any future order to dismantle Jewish settlements in Gaza.

The hillboys oppose the withdrawal, of course, but have more ambitious plans. They want, according to the Shin Bet, "to commit an act that will change reality."

Murdering Sharon could be that sort of act; Yigal Amir, the assassin of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, is a hero to the hillboys and their supporters. But the Jewish terrorists know that even killing Rabin didn't end the Israeli government's determination to give up "holy land" for reasons of national security or diplomacy.

That's why Israeli intelligence officials fear something even bigger than a prime-ministerial assassination - an attack on the Al Aqsa mosque, Islam's third holiest shrine, located on Jerusalem's Temple Mount.

"Sharon can be protected," says a former military intelligence officer. "The real nightmare is one of these hillboys on a dark night with a shoulder-launched missile that can hit Al Aqsa from 1,000 meters. Talk about altering reality! Blow the roof off the mosque, and what happened after the World Trade Center will seem like a sideshow."

Ne, jer se njihovi telefonski brojevi mogu pronaći na webu, oni u Americi...

... the current Knesset speaker, who intoned that "Hebron and Jerusalem are the eternal capitals of Israel", while professing devotion to the ideals of Beitar... The Israeli police recently busted a Russian Jew in Hebron who had a bunch of stolen IDF weapons (grenades, ammo etc). He was released because this collection, was apparently a hobby not connected to the Jewish Underground (Uri Glickman, Ma'ariv).

Sharon on Firing of Kassam's

Ha'aretz Hebrew, Aug 31, 05:10

By Aluf Ben

The security cabinet approved today the defence establishment's counter-plans against the firing of Qassem rockets from the Gaza strip. The Defence Minister, Shaul Mofaz presented the plan. It included operations against the actual firing crews and their higher echelons. Also scheduled were direct attacks on the lathes and workshops that produce the rockets and the re-occupation of certain regions of the Gaza strip. Pressure was also to be applied in other areas. The Prime Minister said that the steps proposed were significant but insufficient. He demanded to be presented with additional proposals.

Sharon was extremely angry during the deliberations and said: "If they shell us we've got to shell them." The Attorney-General, Meni Mazuz, intervened and said: "That will be a war crime, from the point of view of the state and also personally." Sharon responded: "But murdering Jews isn't a crime, and the whole world is silent? Murdering Jews is fine?" Mazuz continued "I am not saying that we shouldn't respond but the direct targeting of civilians is a war crime." Sharon and Minister Livnat replied: "No one is suggesting that. No one is suggesting we hit Qalqilya and ignore the consequences."

Minister Avraham Poraz (Shinui) argued in favour of restraint in the period leading to the disengagement. "The bombing in Tel-Aviv and Jerusalem were far more serious than the rockets that hit Sderot, painful as these may be. According to him, after the disengagement Israel should apply the same kind of deterrent policy that it applied following its withdrawal from southern Lebanon.

During the deliberations, Ministers were reminded of the IDF bombing of Ismailiya in the War of Attrition, which caused the flight of the Egyptian inhabitants from the city. Minister Zevulun Orlev (Mafdal - National Religious Party) remarked: "Where will they run to this time? From Rafah to Khan Yunis?"

Let's just stop posting in this thread...
