Ne želim da bude nevidljiv, dapače. Ne možeš se bojati onoga za što ne znaš da postoji.

Designs have been drawn up for a radically enhanced version of the Otokar Cobra armoured patrol vehicle, based on AM General's XM1211 ECV II evolutionary concept vehicle, a growth version of the US Army's High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV). The US Army has ordered 15 examples of the ECV II, which it is due to start testing at Aberdeen Proving Ground in January 2008

Developers consider growth path for NLOS-C
A range of new modifications are being developed for the US Army's Future Combat Systems (FCS) Non Line Of Sight Cannon (NLOS-C), which has recently been accorded the nomenclature XM1203. As the lead platform in the FCS Manned Ground Vehicle (MGV) programme, it is now well advanced in development

First FCS elements reach the field
As the US Army begins fielding the first pieces of the Future Combat Systems (FCS) equipment, service leaders are pressing for further collaboration with their UK counterparts on land forces modernisation. FCS is a long-term effort led by Boeing and Science Applications International Corp (SAIC) to develop a networked family of manned ground vehicles (MGVs), unmanned aircraft systems, unattended sensors, robotic vehicles and precision munitions that will eventually equip future brigade combat teams

Israel continues to replenish war stocks
Israel is continuing its significant procurement of ammunition to replenish and expand its emergency stocks of air- and ground-launched weapons following the 2006 war in Lebanon and in anticipation of another conflict. Following the announcement of several major requirements for precision-guided munitions for the Israel Air Force (IAF), Israel has issued a requirement for USD1.33 billion worth of ammunition to be acquired from the US under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programme

Czech MoD asks Steyr to tackle Pandur problems
The Czech Ministry of Defence (MoD) has asked the Steyr consortium (General Dynamics Land Systems Europe) to correct a list of technical problems on its Pandur II 8 x 8 armoured vehicles before they undergo operational testing by the Army of the Czech Republic (ACR). The MoD sent the Steyr consortium a list of technical specifications, which are not in accordance with documentation initially agreed on by both sides during the contract signing in April 2006 for 199 Pandur II 8 x 8s

Fighter aircraft status report: FA-18E/F - Super Hornet delivers its sting
The US Navy's Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet fighter aircraft was not originally envisaged to be a multirole air-to-ground fighter. However it is proving to be an effective, adaptable weapon in Iraq ground operations. For example, the US Department of Defense's (DoD's) summary of air combat over Iraq on 31 August reflects the F/A-18's new role in today's theatre of operations

Concerns emerge over funding for Israel's air defence system
Israeli government and industry officials are optimistic that a forthcoming air defence system will create an impenetrable 'dome' around the country's borders against short-range missile and rocket attacks, particularly from Gaza, although defence experts are sceptical about the system's promised price, delivery schedule and performance criteria. Codenamed Iron Dome, the system is being put together by prime contractor Rafael

Raytheon blames NCADE trials failure on radar lock
Raytheon has ascribed the failure of the Network Centric Airborne Defense Element (NCADE) missile trial planned for September to "range issues". The trial was supposed to mark the first carriage and launch trials of the new NCADE boost and ascent-phase missile-defence system, but Mike Booen, vice-president of Raytheon's Directed Energy Weapons business, told Jane's the trial window closed when the host aircraft's radar lost lock on target at a critical stage

Portuguese F-16s take up Baltic air-policing reins
Portuguese Air Force (FAP) Lockheed Martin F-16 fighter aircraft took over NATO air-policing missions for the Baltic States on 31 October, the Lithuanian Ministry of Defence has announced. The FAP contingent, which comprises four F-16s and about 70 support personnel, has assumed responsibility for patrolling the region from the Romanian Air Force, which, for the past three months, has conducted operations with its MiG-21 Lancer C interceptor aircraft

New Zealand starts negotiations on RNZAF's A109 acquisition
New Zealand's Minister of Defence, Phil Goff, announced on 30 October that contract negotiations have begun with AgustaWestland to purchase five A109 light utility and training helicopters and a flight simulator for the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF). The A109 will replace Bell 47G-3B Sioux helicopters - a type that has been in service with the RNZAF since 1965 - in the training role

Pressure mounts to terminate the Skjold-class FAC
A report from the Norwegian Defence Policy Commission (DPC) has recommended that Norway's low defence budget should be increased by "at least" NOK1 billion (USD185 million) over the present level of NOK31.5 billion. The DPC also supports the recommendation of Chief of Defence General Sverre Diesen to terminate the NOK4 billion Skjold-class fast-attack craft (FAC) programme as even with the recommended budget increase it will not be possible to operate the planned fleet of six Skjold vessels

Audit reveals problems with Australia's frigate upgrade programme
An Australian National Audit Office (ANAO) report on the AUD2 billion (USD1.84 billion) upgrade of four Royal Australian Navy (RAN) Adelaide-class guided-missile frigates (FFGs) has disclosed a serious contractual rift between prime contractor ADI Ltd, now Thales Australia, and the country's Defence Materiel Organisation (DMO). The report has also revealed performance deficiencies in the underwater warfare system and electronic support system (ESS) aboard the first ship in the programme

PARIS --- In an abrupt policy shift, Saudi Arabia has signed an agreement to buy over 150 Russian-made Mi-35 Hind and Mi-17 Hip helicopters worth over $2.2 billion, ending French hopes of sealing a long-delayed sale of 148 helicopters and raising doubts about future French arms sales to the Saudi kingdom.

Sources say the Memorandum of Understanding with Russia was signed in Ryad in mid-September by members of the private cabinet of Saudi King Abdallah bin Abd al-Aziz Al Saud, and follows extended visits to Russia by Saudi military delegations in February and March 2007 to appraise the capabilities of Russian helicopters and other weapons.

Jane's, danas:

Taliban evolving to counter ISAF threat
Afghanistan's Taliban is acting on lessons learned from contacts as the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) bears down on the group's traditional stronghold of eastern and southern Afghanistan, according to Brigadier-General Joseph Votel, deputy commander of operations for ISAF's Regional Command East. "The Taliban is learning from their experience [in conflicts with ISAF], in the same way we are," he said, "and we see increasing use of heavier weapons on their part," Brig Gen Votel said from ISAF's Bagram Air Field in Afghanistan on 15 November

The EU's senior military official, General Henri Bentegéat, chairman of the EU Military Committee (EUMC), has stated that he is lacking logistics support and helicopters as the organisation plans to launch a peacekeeping mission in Chad and the Central African Republic (CAR). "Our mission in Chad will not be the largest the EU has launched, but it will be about the most difficult," said Gen Bentegéat

Front-line helicopter gunships evolve for the modern battlefield
The delivery of the US Army's first Boeing AH-64D Apache Longbow attack helicopter on 3 October 2007 (built under the extended Block II contract) illustrates the continued importance of this particular genre of battlefield helicopter. The dedicated attack helicopter was born out of the armed close-air support applications for utility helicopters, notably the UH-1 'Huey' series, during the Vietnam conflict of the mid-to-late 1960s

Czech MoD selects Dingo
The Czech Ministry of Defence (MoD) has downselected the Krauss-Maffei-Wegmann (KMW) Dingo II as its preferred light armoured 4 x 4 vehicle for the Army of the Czech Republic's (ACR's) 601st Special Forces Battalion. The VOP-026 Sternberk military repair depot was informed in a letter sent by the MoD that its vehicle, the BAE Sytems OMC Land Systems RG-31, was being rejected on the grounds that the manufacturer could not deliver the vehicle within the two-month deadline following the completion of the tender

Training the tiger: Malaysian industry tries to balance domestic and overseas ambitions

Despite a period of growth from the mid-1990s, which transformed the Malaysian defence industry from being capable only of providing common-user items and maintenance support for foreign equipment, Malaysia's defence industry still has a long way to go before it can claim to be a major global player. For example, though Malaysian defence industries manufacture a vast range of equipment, much is built under licence

Attack helicopters adapt their role for the asymmetric battlefield
A decade ago the emerging doctrine of 'air manoeuvre' had begun to grip the military imagination; the enhanced sensor and armament capabilities of the latest generation of purpose-built attack helicopters promised new possibilities for forcing decisive actions against conventional forces on the contemporary battlefield. Taking this to its ultimate conclusion, future rapidly deployable ground formations could be cast in support of helicopter-borne assíault troops and attack helicopters, rather than the other way round
