U srpnju 1977. njegov najstariji sin Karac umire od infekcije želuca dok je Plant bio angažiran sa Led Zeppelinom na koncertnoj turneji po Sjedinjenim Državama. Ostatak turneje trenutno je otkazan. Plant je mjesecima bio povučen u svojoj kući u Midlandsu i njegova daljnja glazbena karijera bila je upitna. Karacova smrt kasnije ga je inspirirala da napiše skladbu "All My Love", koju je posvetio preminulom sinu, a nalazi se na albumu In Through the Out Door, iz 1979. godine.
