NASA’s Last Rocket
The United States is unlikely to build anything like the Space Launch System ever again. But it’s still good that NASA did.
|
Quote:
Members of Congress had no particular design in mind, but they demanded that NASA rummage through crates of old space shuttle parts whenever possible to build this thing, and required that it launch by 2016.
Mandated to build the big rocket, NASA cobbled together exploration programs that would use it. First, it was an asteroid rocket. Then a Mars rocket. Now, it is an Artemis moon rocket. In any event, the Space Launch System is billions of dollars over budget and five years beyond its compulsory launch date.
The setbacks and slow pace that have plagued the Space Launch System stand in stark contrast to what else has happened in rocketry in the past decade.
|
Quote:
There is great value in that. The big rocket won’t be needed forever. It might be needed only long enough to get the first woman on the lunar surface. The commercial launch sector may be ready to take it from there.
It is highly unlikely that NASA will ever again rely on rockets it has built on its own. The Space Launch System is the end of the line. If the only purpose it serves is giving the nation the time and confidence to get a private, reusable vessel spaceborne, it will have been a success.
Whether the Space Launch System program ends next year or next decade, unlike the end of the space shuttle or Saturn 5, it will not be the end of a chapter, but the end of a book. NASA will be out of the rocket business. When the next generation goes to Kennedy Space Center and sees a giant old Space Launch System booster on display, the tour guide will say, “They don’t make ’em like that anymore,” and that will be true — literally.

Elon Musk Says He’ll Be Landing Starships on Mars “Well Before 2030”
Elon Musk really can't wait to get to Mars.
Elon Musk really can’t wait to get to Mars — and he thinks his space company will be landing there sooner rather than later.
In a new tweet, Musk promised that “SpaceX will be landing Starships on Mars well before 2030.” According to the billionaire, however, the real challenge will be to make “Mars Base Alpha self-sustaining.”
In context, Musk may have been trying to distract from a more substantive question. His tweet was in reply to a Twitter thread about European leaders starting to sweat under the pressure of SpaceX undercutting the price it costs to launch satellites, as Ars Technica‘s Eric Berger argued in a Monday piece.
Europe could end up having a hard time staying competitive when it comes to launching satellites, especially with regards to the European Space Agency’s Ariane 6 booster and smaller Vega-C, both set to make their debut in 2022.
“They are aiming too low,” Musk replied to Ars‘ tweet of the piece. “Only rockets that are fully and rapidly reusable will be competitive. Everything else will seem like a cloth biplane in the age of jets.”
More troubling, however, is that a new ESA initiative is aiming to have its competitive launch system, successor of the Ariane 6 and Vega-C, ready for 2030 and onward — eons from now in SpaceX terms, especially considering the company wants to land on Mars well before then.
SpaceX is racing ahead in its efforts to establish Starship as a reliable cargo and eventual passenger spacecraft. While the company has yet to land its first full-scale prototype — and have it stay in one piece after touchdown — Musk is hoping to have the vehicle go orbital as soon as this summer.
A trip around the moon will follow in 2023, according to his plans, with a first flight to Mars in just four years. Or, at least, that’s what Musk suggested to the International Mars Society Convention in October of last year.
Even once Starship makes it to space and back in one piece for the first time, getting to Mars is a big jump — and establishing a Mars base will be an even bigger one. And those realities are something Musk is probably painfully aware of.

SN5 - utorak, 4.8.
SN6 - četvrtak, 3.9.
SN8 - srijeda, 9.12.
SN9 - utorak, 2.2.
SN10 - srijeda, 3.3

Eksplozija izgleda, tj. takvo nešto se čulo. Jebo ih i letenje u magli.

As Artemis Moves Forward, NASA Picks SpaceX to Land Next Americans on Moon
NASA is getting ready to send astronauts to explore more of the Moon as part of the Artemis program, and the agency has selected SpaceX to continue development of the first commercial human lander that will safely carry the next two American astronauts to the lunar surface. At least one of those astronauts will make history as the first woman on the Moon. Another goal of the Artemis program includes landing the first person of color on the lunar surface.
The agency’s powerful Space Launch System rocket will launch four astronauts aboard the Orion spacecraft for their multi-day journey to lunar orbit. There, two crew members will transfer to the SpaceX human landing system (HLS) for the final leg of their journey to the surface of the Moon. After approximately a week exploring the surface, they will board the lander for their short trip back to orbit where they will return to Orion and their colleagues before heading back to Earth.
The firm-fixed price, milestone-based contract total award value is $2.89 billion.
"With this award, NASA and our partners will complete the first crewed demonstration mission to the surface of the Moon in the 21st century as the agency takes a step forward for women’s equality and long-term deep space exploration,” said Kathy Lueders, NASA's associate administrator for Human Explorations and Operations Mission Directorate. “This critical step puts humanity on a path to sustainable lunar exploration and keeps our eyes on missions farther into the solar system, including Mars.”
SpaceX has been working closely with NASA experts during the HLS base period of performance to inform its lander design and ensure it meets NASA’s performance requirements and human spaceflight standards. A key tenet for safe systems, these agreed-upon standards range from areas of engineering, safety, health, and medical technical areas.
